“I like the boxing sessions because we come here to train but we always have a laugh and there is a real family atmosphere. The programme keeps you disciplined and if I wasn’t coming to these sessions I would probably be hanging around on the streets so it’s good that we are given a purpose.”
Ellie is 16 years old from Moston in Manchester. In May 2018 Ellie started her ACN journey at a free open access boxing session thanks to the #BActive programme. Ellie first started attending with the idea to improve her physical health and to have fun whilst making new friends. Ellie soon released that she was engaging in a programme which was more than just sport. At the beginning Ellie was quite shy and was the only girl at the session. However, as the weeks developed, with support from the coaches and peers Ellie has become more confident within the group, building her self-esteem and communication skills. Ellie continued to attend the sessions and soon built a rapport with the coaches and trainers on the sessions, seeing the female coaches as role models and giving her something to aspire to. Through these relationships and raised ambition Ellie has now successful completed her Sports Leader Level 2 Award and hopes to start volunteering in the next 2 months.
