Hayley Turner OBE

Hayley Turner is a retired professional jockey who is considered by many to have been the greatest female jockey of all time. Hayley won more than 750 races during her 15 year career which included 100 wins in 2008. She is also the only women to have won a Group One race outright.

Unlike many professional Jockey’s Hayley did not come from a racing family but picked up a love of horse racing from attending a taster session at the Northern Racing College with a friend. She did however gain a talent for horse riding from her mother, a riding instructor.

Since retiring from competitive racing Hayley has been able to dedicate more time to developing a career in media with At The Races and other media outlets. She has also been working closely with us at Active Communities Network to give young people more of an insight into the world of horse racing. She has taken groups of young people from deprived areas of England, including London, Hull and Doncaster, to both Lingfield and Doncaster, given them a private tour and a special insight into what a jockey goes through on the day of a race with access to some of the more exclusive parts of the ground such as the weighing room.

Through a partnership with the British Horseracing Authority we look to have more events like this to open young people’s eyes to the opportunities that are around them.
