ACN has been working in Lewisham for the past four years, in partnership with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation. As with Tower Hamlets, the programme has been developed using methodology established as part of our successful Urban Stars initiative.
Thanks to our friends at the Big Lottery Fund, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Asda Foundation, St James’s Place Foundation and Youth First we’ve been able to grow our projects. To date we’ve helped more than 10,303 young people, amounting to a total of 22,798 engagement hours.
More recently ACN has developed both accredited and non-accredited training courses, giving young people the opportunity to develop new skills and build their own personal portfolio. And it doesn’t end there - everyone who takes part is offered the chance to further their learning and gain a qualification.
Here in Lewisham, a total of 42 young people have attained one of the following qualifications:
- Sports Leaders UK Community Sports Leaders Awards Level 1
- Sports Leaders UK Level 1
- 1st 4 Sport Level 1 Award in Developing Community Activities for Youth at Risk
ACN believes volunteering can be a gateway into paid work. We provide placements for young people seeking a career in coaching or youth work. Over the past four years almost 49 volunteers have helped to build our projects - doing everything from delivering sessions to conducting surveys to aid our evaluation process - and many of these will progress onto paid sessional work.
For those whose interests lie outside sport, we can arrange impressive work experience placements with our London-based partners. This year we hope to give young people from Lewisham the opportunity to work at St James’s Place, a prestigious wealth management firm, gaining invaluable experience and learning new skills.
