This is Dan. Dan is 20 years old and lives in Salford, Greater Manchester with his two parents. Dan has always enjoyed playing football and started attending our sessions in 2017 with the intention of becoming a role model for the younger children. Since joining Dan has been heavily involved in volunteering at the sessions and developed a new set of friends as well as completed the FA level 1 Football coaching qualification. In the future Dan wants to become a PE teacher or develop a career as a professional football coach. Volunteering on the sessions has pushed him out of his comfort zone and has helped to hit home just how important sport is in his life. Whatever Dan has in mind, we are sure that he has a Bright Future!
ACN has established a great team in East Manchester, based in Miles Platting. Our journey began here in 2010. By 2013 it became clear that we were providing an invaluable service to the area’s young people and, thanks to our partnership with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, we were able to continue our good work based on the advice of local strategic partners.
Today the young people we engage with are offered fun, youth led inspiring sports activities, ranging from dance to football, basketball to boxing. There are seven sessions per week across six day (Monday to Saturday) at a range of venues across East Manchester including Ten Acres Lane Sports Complex in Newton Heath, the Manchester Tennis & Football Centre in Ancoats and Wright Robinson Sports College and Active Me Studios in Gorton. All sessions are free to attend.
Alongside our weekly sports sessions young people are offered and engage in a programme of volunteering, social action and accredited qualifications with relevant local work experience and employment opportunities.
Key to the programmes impact to date has been the strength of its partners. Our trusted partners at Eastlands Trust, Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Police, East Manchester Youth and Sports Forums, Factory Youth Zone and Active Me Studios are an important part of what we do – helping meet the bespoke needs of Manchester’s Young People. We really couldn’t have had the success we have without them.

This is Aaron. Aaron is 22 and lives in the heart of Newton heath, City of Manchester with his parents. Aaron’s neighbourhood is known for it’s high levels of gang violence and shootings but Aaron stayed away from the troubles by focusing on sports and attending our football sessions. Aaron started to participate in 2013 at the age of 17 and within 6 months he had become heavily involved in volunteering on the sessions because he wanted to help his community and develop his leadership skills. Aaron has completed the full circle of our methodology, evolving from participant, gaining qualifications, completing work experience and is now head coach for our East Manchester programme. His future ambitions is to complete his FA Level 2 and gain additional qualifications which will push him forward. Volunteering has changed Aaron’s life, before volunteering he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but volunteering has allowed him to follow his passion and create a dream job which he loves!
