EmpowHER

EmpowHER is a programme designed and developed by women and girls to provide education around safety, violence against women and girls and managing safe relationships.

Why EmpowHER?

EmpowHER was born in 2021 to inspire and empower women and girls around their personal safety in response to incidents involving young women feeling unsafe.

During this process and rising awareness of girls safety campaign , women being murdered was the forefront of our local and UK wide news. The issue of ending violence against women and girls was being highlighted but the young people felt there was no action being taken.

About the programme

The programme started with a consultation of hospitality venues, bars, night clubs, public transport and local restaurants around Belfast. The consultation showed that staff training and safety was not a priority, so we developed workshops around relationships, consent, social media awareness and allyship.

In addition, we have developed a small safety pack that included a safety alarm and a card linked to a QR code with 10 services available if feeling unsafe.

What have we achieved with the programme?

We have engaged with over 1000 women and girls and have created allies and volunteers to continue to spread our message and strengthen our voice.

Our next steps is to empower and educate men and community activists to support and champion women and girls.

I am so passionate about this topic, schools need to take a lead from this initiative as more education is needed around the topic of safety and relationships. No one teaches you about healthy and unhealthy relationships. I carry my safety alarm everywhere I go , people think it's just a keyring.

Programme participant, EmpowHER

Our relationship session is done through a game , its very informative and allows participates to learn new perspectives and share life experiences through scenarios, group discussions and debates. Our campaign is really refreshing, its attractive and engages with everyone. An informal way to generate conversations through games and discussions. Our campaign gets people thinking , it allows for us to have uncomfortable conversations around drugs and alcohol using our safety card.
