The Southwark Changemakers Programme is pioneering a new model of grassroots funding that is rooted in trust, collaboration, and a streamlined grant-making process. This bold, two-year initiative empowers Southwark residents by devolving grant-making to the hyper-local level, equipping them with small-scale funding to address the issues that matter most in their communities working with young people and their families. Supported by United St Saviour’s Charity, the programme is set to assist up to 30 groups or individuals in 2025 and 2026, with a particular focus on engaging communities traditionally excluded from mainstream funding.
With an inclusive and relational approach, the programme simplifies application processes, offers tailored governance and mentorship support, and replaces rigid reporting with meaningful 1:1 conversations and project visits. Intentional multilingual outreach and partnerships with trusted local intermediaries have successfully connected the programme with underfunded groups facing systemic barriers.
The funded projects, born directly from community needs, tackle critical issues such as financial literacy, social isolation and more demonstrating the creativity and resilience of Southwark’s residents.
While this approach has introduced challenges, such as managing power dynamics and meeting the resource demands of relational funding, Active Communities Network continues to adapt, refine, and support the Changemakers. Over the next year, the programme will focus on sustaining this community driven impact, sharing key learnings, and showcasing how devolved grant-making is transforming local communities in Southwark.
This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community-led funding to foster inclusion, equity, and meaningful change.
